Location

Whitchurch Preschool is located in a large single-story building in the grounds of Whitchurch Primary School. Whilst remaining completely independent of the Primary School, we have a good relationship with it. The preschool is also part of the Tavistock Town Early Years Partnership, meeting and sharing good practice with other early years settings and foundation years teachers in the local area.

The preschool has charitable status and is run by a voluntary committee of parents. It is managed day-to-day by a fully qualified teacher. We were independently inspected by Ofsted and were awarded an ‘Outstanding’ outcome in the most recent Ofsted report.

The preschool has two fully fenced outdoor play areas, one with hard and soft play areas and one grassed. The children are also able to enjoy visits to the school’s woodland area nearby.

Aims

It is the pre-school’s aim to: –

a) provide high quality care and education for children under statutory school age in a happy, caring atmosphere.

b) deliver the Early Years Foundation Stage by adhering to the legal requirements relating to learning, development and welfare by following the 7 Areas of Learning and Development as produced by the Department for Education.

c) provide a safe, secure and stimulating environment with well-planned experiences based on children’s play both indoors and outdoors including a balance of child-led and adult-initiated activities.

d) meet the individual needs of all children and work within a framework which ensures equal opportunities for both children and their families to promote equality and value diversity.

e) make systematic observations and assessments of each child’s achievements, interests and learning styles and use these to plan future relevant experiences for each child and report to parents.

f) work in partnership with parents/carers to help children to learn and develop, ensuring that each child has a key person.

g) prepare the children socially, emotionally and educationally for a smooth and confident transition to primary school.
